Ocean going ships make more than 10,000 visits to ports in the U.S. from around the globe each year. Delivery of goods to ports and from ports to consumers is powered by diesel fuel each step of the way. Burning diesel fuel releases toxic air contaminants, smog forming air pollutants, and greenhouse gases that damage our health and change our climate. The ten largest ports in the US account for 80% of all US imports, and are major contributors to dangerous pollution levels and green house gas emissions. In fact in California alone goods movement associated diesel pollution costs at least $28 billion every year in health and economic costs. Working alongside area communities and public health and environmental organizations Communities for Clean Ports has successfully pushed the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach (collectively by far the largest port in the country) to develop, adopt, and implement programs containing the most sweeping standards for clean air and clean truck programs anywhere in the world, standards which can and should serve as a model for every US and international port city. This goal is central to Communities for Clean Ports’ mission and EndOil’s global mission: cleaning up and building new alternative goods movement and transportation systems worldwide is key to ending oil dependence and realizing a new, sustainable society. Our role is one of support, collaboration, and education, and bridging the gap between communities and American consumers and the public world of systems, which are necessary to our survival and well-being. Change begins and ends with people and communities.
