Communities for Clean Ports educates, collaborates, and advocates towards finding clean, sustainable, and eventually zero-carbon, non-polluting alternatives to the current goods movement system—We work on technology, fuel and infrastructure solutions for the now, next generation, and our 2050 future and beyond.

Healing our communities from the environmental, social, and economic impacts of our goods movement system, where the ports and port communities are central, requires knowledge about what the goods movement system really is and what the most pressing issues in your community are, an understanding about how to get involved and how to help your own community become more engaged, and ultimately, change takes action. This means that YOU are fundamental to healing your community, visioning a new ideal for what your community can look like in terms of transportation, and freight movement, employment opportunities, and more, and this means YOU are central to changing it all for the better!

ENSURE CALIFORNIA LEADS THE WAY TO OIL INDEPENDENCE

Think $4 for a gallon of gas is high? America's record-high prices at the pump are a mere fraction of the true cost of oil, when we figure in the lost jobs, higher taxes, terrorism threats, unnecessary wars, death and health problems caused by our dependence on oil.  As you probably know, California and its Ports rely heavily on diesel.   It's time for California to enact a comprehensive state plan to free us from oil dependency, because if California can lead the way, the national and world will follow. Call on our governor, elected officials, and key decision makers to develop a plan to end our oil addiction before Independence Day 2009!  Click here to take action!

DEMAND CLEAN AIR FROM THE EPA

EPA logoThe California Air Resources Board, South Coast Air Quality Management District, and Southern California Association of Governments have finally reached a consensus plan on how to approach attainment of federal nitrogen oxides (NOx) and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) - pollutants that cause respiratory disease, asthma and increase the likelihood of cancer. But, California cannot regulate all of the goods movement vehicles that emit these port pollution poisonings. The responsibility of regulating the emissions of goods movement vehicles - trains, long haul trucks, and ocean going vessels - is the responsibility of the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA needs to hear from you, demanding it do its fair share in cleaning up our air quality and improving our health.  Click here to take action!
